Sound Production Knowledge Boost

September 12, 2008

Sadly sound is very often the most overlooked and neglected part of production. Too often sound is treated as an after-thought and where we might spend hours fussing over a handful of visual edits we seem to dedicate no where near as much attention to sound in post.

To help develop our understanding of sound production (and perhaps eliminate some of the misconceptions that sound is an arcane and inaccessible art) I have gathered together a new set articles and tutorials on sound fundamentals. You will find them under the Tier 1 and Tier 2 headings on the READINGS page of IFSSProduction.net as well as links here:

Production Sound Essentials

7 Steps to great field audio

Editing Voice Tracks Like a pro - by Jay Rose

In particular David Tames has produced one of the best presentation documents on audio recording I’ve ever read. Focused on documentary interview but relevant to all sound recording, it’s called Practical Sound Recording and Editing Techniques for better Video. You can download it here as a PDF (35mb)

//kino-eye.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/prez1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

It covers all the fundamentals with great illustrations, links and references. Absolutely compulsory reading for ALL STUDENTS.

Before you start in on a new phase production – shoot, edit, sound, grading – you should check over the Readings and Production Bible pages of this site to reinforce the key concepts before you dive in.

There is only One skill you really need to be a succesful filmmaker, that’s the ability to Learn and to teach yourself; to acquire and apply new knowledge. That’s what the IFSSProduction site is all about – providing a dynamic patform to allow you to teach yourself and to re-inforce your own learning. So I encourage you all to utilse IFSSProduction.net and take the time to read tthe articles and posts here as well as to post questions and comments to keep the Blog dynamic.
