Edit Revisions and Conforming Audio in STP

September 7, 2008

One the great dilemmas of the sound editor is dealing with editor who change their mind.

Kevin P. McAuliffe over at PVC as assembled a fantastically succinct video that shows how to use the Conform Project feature of SoundTrackPro to match up a sound edit/mix to a revised edit from FCP.

I confess that i was until very recently ignorant of this feature in STP. SoundtrackPro has long struck me as the great DAW that almost was, but isnt quite. At times tedious, frustrating, dare I say slightly unstable. But at the same time presenting a great deal of promise and some great moments of workflow inspiration. I more readily find myself a happier sound editor in the more powerful Adobe Audition or fluidly fast Sony Acid. But with my eyes now opened to the beautiful effectiveness of CONFORM in STP.

  1. Is this the equivalent of the feature you showed us on FCP and Premiere Pro the other day? Where everything is brought into one archive?

  2. Not quite John. Adobe apps communicate directly with live-update. So making changes to a project in After Effects automatically updates that project as an item in premiere – likewise Photoshop, Encore and Soundbooth.

This feature in FCP is specifically for dealing with a change in the visual edit once you have already started the sound edit. It allows you to check and approve any changes and merge two projects together.

  3. Ah, right. Thanks.

  4. Ive been testing the beta release of the new Adobe CS4 and there is some superb new sound/edit integration coming between the new Adobe Soundbooth and Premiere Pro that is pretty interesting. I cant say anymore at this stage as Im under NDA but in a few weeks time….
